PURPOSE:
To establish procedures and guidelines for faculty, staff, students, and community with regard to pets on all University properties, including Off-Campus Instructional Centers.
POLICY:
Western New Mexico University (WNMU) prohibits pets in all WNMU buildings and vehicles, except for those animals specifically exempted by this policy (“Exempt Pets”). Pets observed in university buildings should be reported to Campus Police.
This policy does not apply to property owned by WNMU and leased to others unless specifically indicated in the lease agreements. Exempt Pets include:
- Service animals under the definition of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Service animals do not include emotional support animals.
- Animals used for research or clinical or teaching animals.
- On-duty police dogs.
- Pets in the WNMU Presidents residence.
While on University property, including Old James Stadium and Cornali Field Dog Park, pets must be attended to and under control at all times. A pet owner observed by Campus Police, on university property, with an uncontrolled pet will be asked to restrain the pet or leave campus.
WNMU’s Old James Stadium and Cornali Field Dog Park, located on West Street, are designated areas where pets can roam freely. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets anywhere on university property (including the Dog Park) and can utilize the animal waste stations conveniently located across campus for their convenience. Any unattended animals will be reported to Animal Control.
This policy also applies to WNMU’s off-campus instructional centers. The off-campus instructional centers will notify Campus Police of pets on property or in buildings.
